It goes on...

Life is funny sometimes. Bad things happen, people come and go, and some just don't compromise. But with out the diversity and difference of opinion, life would be boring. Embrace others, and always treasure yourself. This is the only time we have.

Changing The World...Starting With the Atmosphere

You’re driving to wal-mart for an extension cord, throwing pizza rolls into the oven, and washing your clothes in the washing machine. It all seems like a regular day to me. None of those activities seems harmful, but many do not understand how their daily routines are damaging our earth. Carbon Dioxide emissions are seemingly unavoidable in the American way of life. What many of us don’t realize is that the way we live is one of luxury…and danger.

After refusing to put the Kyoto Protocol into effect, Bush let oil usage continue in mass amounts. If we let our way of life continue our children and grandchildren will experience the negative effects of global warming. This issue can no longer be pushed aside. The temperatures will surely rise, glaciers will melt and flooding will occur. This will lead to negative affects for many, including the possible extinction of the polar bear. You might be thinking, why should I care about this while I’m living here in Athens? There is no right answer. But I think you should for the simple reason of pure humanity. While we may be the last affected, less developed countries on lower altitudes will face death and disease in a dark future.

While so many depend on the United States to create a safer world for everyone, we must also look to the developing world. If they continue to follow in our footsteps they will someday face the same problems. Instead of undoing the damage we have now incurred with industrialization, developing countries have the chance to make a fresh start. Using solar or wind power is an option. If they are able to industrialize using environmentally friendly options, they will have a healthier country later. But it seems hard to worry about the atmosphere when your children are starving. Environmental issues will probably be overlooked until lesser-developed countries have developed a more modern way of life.

According to the Union of Concerned scientists, China and the United States are leading the world in carbon emissions. This is nothing to be proud of. If we are to be a true world leader, we will take the first steps toward reducing emissions.  Some may suffer economic blows while others will continue on without effect. But others must follow our example in order to make a distinctive difference. We are letting our atmosphere slowly deteriorate while we mindlessly drive to the Rec Center when we could walk. But complete blame cannot be put on consumers as we are constantly persuaded to buy guilty carbon emitting items. Those in power need to take control and come up with new, popular alternatives. If you go to www.carbonfootprint.com you can decipher how many carbons you’re emitting on a daily basis. You might be surprised.

Making international changes is never easy.  Getting everyone to agree and cooperate is a tiring task. But that is why you can start to make changes as an individual. By simply riding a bike to near destinations or hanging your clothes outside you are creating a healthier atmosphere.

Simply Bromantic

They are seeing movies, attending sporting events and eating in unison..who you ask? Most likely your boyfriend and his latest bff. Over the years women have commonly had close friendships and countless ladies nights over apple martinis. But now it seems that the men are leaving their ladies at home to chase their latest bromance. Maybe men find it easier to open up to their fellow kind. While men are commonly seen as less sensitive, we wonder why they don’t open up to us. But in a recent epiphany I have decided it is because they are secretly opening up to each other instead.  Men and women may never entirely understand what makes the other happy or sad, but we sure do love trying to figure it out.
Men stereotype women’s relationships as gossipy and clingy, but maybe it’s because they’re hiding their own same sex best friends. Women go to the bathroom in twos, yes, but men eat and maybe even nap in unison. Take it from an old episode of Friends. Joey and Ross enjoy an afternoon nap together, and are horrified when the rest of the gang walks in. This male camaraderie was spotted on one of the most famous television shows of our time. Yes, bromances are being publicized. Male friendships may mean more to your man than you thought.
There are many famous male friendships that I just can’t overlook. Brody Jenner’s show Bromance didn’t last long, but sure made its point.  A newer movie, I love you man, centers on an engaged man who seeks a best man and new pal. Sure enough, a new friendship ensues. But bromances in no way ruin relationships. If anything, it encourages men to have relationships outside of just their girlfriends or wives. Even though women encourage it, it’s easy to become jealous when your man is fully invested in a new bromance. He’s borrowing hats, going to concerts and maybe even ditching your date night to go sledding with his bro.
Bromances may be the new phenomenon. Males everywhere are searching for their bros, while we ladies continue the search for the fairy tale ending. What we never expected was for our knight to arrive with his wingman in tow. Maybe it’s because women are more willing to sacrifice things like friendship when a relationship ensues. The media may subtly ridicule male bonds, but they continue to be a source of entertainment for young audiences. From Ross and Joey to real life buds Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, bromances are certainly more than a fad.
Society evolves with media and popular television. As liberalization changes young people, it also changes their relationships. Maybe all this humorous publicizing of male friendships is simply cynicism of a conservative American past. Female bonds are becoming old news as HBO viewers are shifting their tastes. Sex and the City is fading into the past and Entourage is attracting men of all ages. Clearly, it is the age of glamorous male friendships. Beer and nuts is the new wine and cheese, Frisbee is the new nail salon, and male adventures are the new shopping adventures. An improvement? That’s up to you to decide.
